Irish artist Paul Henry (1876-1958) spent almost a decade on Achill Island between 1910 and 1919. Paul Henry and his wife Grace Henry painted Achill landscapes and portraits of Achill people, and Paul Henry's paintings came to typify an image of the west of Ireland in the early years of the Irish Free State. |

Achill Cottages by Paul Henry |
|
« Previous image | Index | Next image » Belfast born artist Paul Henry lived and worked on Achill Island between 1910 and 1919. It was on Achill that he developed his familiar painting style which used highly structured cloud formations. This painting of a traditional west of Ireland stone cottage with thatched roof on Achill Island shows the beginnings of Paul Henry's characteristic rendition of clouds. Some traditional whitewashed stone cottages are still to be seen on Achill Island - as are (sometimes) the dramatic cloud formations and vast skyscapes that so enthralled Paul Henry. « Paul Henry story |
