Ireland pictures : Gallery 1 : Croaghaun from Slievemore, Achill Island
This image in Achill 24/7's gallery of Ireland pictures was taken from the west-facing slopes of Slievemore (Sliabh Mór), above the deserted village. It shows the western end of Achill Island, in particular the peak of Croaghaun (Cruachán), Achill's second highest mountain at 668m. The dramatic cliffs of Croaghaun, said to be the highest sea cliffs in Europe, are immediately to the right of the highest peak seen in this picture. On the left, at sea level, is just visible the village of Dooagh, where the English novelist Graham Greene holidayed with his American lover Catherine Walston in the late 1940s. |
