The deserted village at Slievemore, Achill Island, is located at the base of the south-facing slope of Slievemore mountain (seen shrouded with cloud in the picture below). Containing the remains of some 100 dwellings within three settlements, the deserted 'village' is a haunting reminder of times past and of the tragic history of Ireland. For though it was partially inhabited well into the 20th century, the deserted village at Slievemore is really a famine village, abandoned principally as a result of the 1845-1849 famines. [more...] |
