Ireland pictures : Gallery 4 : Deserted village, Slievemore, Achill Island
The remains of the dwellings at the deserted village of Slievemore, Achill Island, show that the houses were rectangular in shape and aligned north-south. They were constructed from dry stone (ie. no mortar) and would have featured a thatched roof. Almost all were windowless and many had only one door for light and ventilation. Some of the buildings featured two doors, one each on opposing walls, as in this picture (below). It is thought that this design was to allow cattle to enter from one side for milking and to be taken out through the second doorway. The doorway in this picture has been partially blocked.
