Ireland pictures : Gallery 4 : Deserted village, Slievemore, Achill Island
This picture of the deserted village at Slievemore, Achill Island, was taken facing due east (looking inland to the county Mayo mainland). Keel Lough can be seen in the middle distance while the peaks in the far distance are from the Nephin Beg range. Archaeological research shows that the area of the deserted village was settled from at least the Anglo-Norman period. It is likely that the current dwellings were built on the sites of older buildings and that the 'village' may have been occupied across several different phases. [more...] |
